Is Batman Beyond (1999-2001) Worth Reading?

Batman Beyond originally released as an animated series with a monumentally tall task. Its goal was to create a sequel to Batman, one of the most prolific heroes in comic book history, and against the odds it succeeded. In fact, it was so successful in doing so that the venture received multiple comic book runs, this being the first. Batman Beyond’s initial foray into the world of comic does not stray far from the show. The comic was released concurrently with the animated series, used the same art style, and made each issue episodic. You can tell that the series was aimed more towards children who were already watching the show, likely as an attempt to get them into the DC Comics universe. Regardless, as a fan of Batman Beyond, the nostalgia factor alone was enough to power me through the 24-issue run. I was delighted to revisit Batman Beyond’s rogue’s gallery like Blight, Inque, and Stalker. Unfortunately, the stories themselves are not as well constructed as the animated series and many of them feel as if they were rejected episode pitches. If you are not already acquainted with the Batman Beyond, this will not likely convert you.

Rating: C- If you are a fan of the Batman Beyond Animated series you will most likely enjoy this as each issue looks and reads like an episode. However, if you are not already a fan, there is not much in here that will draw you in.
