Is A Hat in Time Worth Playing?

A Hat in Time is a short and fun Mascot Platformer collect-a-thon, whose release was unfortunately overshadowed by Super Mario Odyssey. In A Hat in Time, you control the aptly named “Hat Kid” as she explores four different worlds collecting her lost time pieces. The world variety in the game is great, and includes a beach town, movie sets, spooky woods, and a Tibetan-esque mountain. While in these worlds you can interact with various NPCs for humorous dialogue as you search for time pieces. As you collect more time pieces Hat Kid will unlock more hats that give her additional powers like the ability to move more quickly (which when upgraded allows you to just ride a scooter), create explosions, and freeze time. My biggest initial problem with the game was that you could bonk into the sides of objects causing Hat Kid to lose all momentum and be momentarily stunned while she fell to the ground. However, you can eventually find an upgrade that neutralizes this minor annoyance, and I did like the game much more after that. This game packs in a lot of charm in a small package that makes it an enjoyable playthrough.

Rating: B- This game nails almost everything that makes a good mascot platformer and is definitely worth checking out for any fans of the genre
