Is Made You Look Worth Watching

Made You Look is a documentary about an art fraud totaling $80 million perpetrated on (or by, depending on who is telling the story) one of the oldest and most well-respected art dealers in New York. I find stories about fraud perpetrated in high end markets fascinating because of the lack of safeguards that you would assume would be in place to prevent people from losing millions of dollars. It turns out that with a convincing enough forgery and the potential to make a lot of money, art fraud was able to be perpetrated in what seemed to be a relatively easy fashion over the course of a decade at Knoedler Gallery. Content wise, this documentary consists primarily of interviews; if you are looking for videos or reenactments, you will be disappointed. However, interviewees include the former head of the gallery where the fraud occurred, industry insiders, the husband of one of the fraudsters, purchasers the fraudulent art, and attorneys involved with the case, including the District Attorney responsible for prosecuting the fraud, so you definitely get what appears to be a well-rounded view of the case.

Rating: B- The subject matter can be a bit dry, but the narrative is well told, and they seem to get interviews with almost all sides involved
